"I don't go to the movies much. If you've seen one, you've seen them all."

I watched this film without prior knowledge of what it was about.
(You should too. It makes the viewing much more leveled and interesting.)
As an attempt to escape his fans after the premiere, he jumps into a passing car driven by Kathy Selden (played by Debbie Reynolds) who he shared a bit of a banter, which he then funnily bumped into again in a party the same night where everyone was introduced to a talking picture that changed the way movies are made.
Despite its age, I should say that it really is one of a kind. From the songs to the physical dance breaks, costume, and sets - it's undeniably well made. Not to mention the stunning technicolor work for something that came from the year 1952.
But what piqued my interest the fact that this film is genuinely about something. Beyond the glitz and the glamour, there is that focus of the change in the times. The transition from "silent pictures" to "talking pictures" - and how a production company dealt with it.
Though most would give this classic a 10 out of 10 - I wouldn't. I don't feel the balance. It does a job to distract you with schticks that you don't realize the lazy shift from one plot to another. I don't want to be that girl but... the whole narrative felt really unfair on the part of Kathy Selden. It felt that there could be so much more for her, but since this is Don Lockwood's story - it felt like she existed as a plot device of some sort instead, for there was not much heart in the romance, either. Though I'm not at all surprised as Kelly was an asshole to Reynolds whilst shooting the film.
Though we could say that Gene Kelly as Don Lockwood is the unforgettable lad in this film, you can't blame me for picking Debbie Reynolds as Kathy Selden for being the absolute darling and scene-stealer of Singin' In The Rain.
I loved that she didn't care much for who Don is. She has dreams, and she works hard to reach them little by little. Though I have an issue with her character shift from feisty aspiring stage actress to the usual supportive girlfriend at the end.
Highs
- Timeless.
- Stunning sets and Technicolor work.
- What made for movie musicals should be like.
Lows
- Not enough Debbie Reynolds.
- Lack of balance in the story.
- I wish to watch this on the big screen.
Like the song lyrics of the song with the same title, watching this film sure was giving me "...a glorious feeling!". It has all I want in a musical made for a film (though nothing could beat Mary Poppins in my opinion), and I definitely enjoyed my time with this one!
Hello! My name is Caroline and I own this blog!
I like watching things, and I love talking about them. In order to bring back life to my slowly dying blog, I have decided to post reviews of the things I have watched here in this place. Not to mention my low-key obsession with taking screen captures. I used to do little thread reviews on my twitter, which I still do to this date. I also have a dedicated Tumblr where I dump most of my screen caps.
Thank you for taking the time and reading this review. It really means a lot to me.
It would be nice to know what you think of the thing I watched in this post as well. Or if you have any suggestions on what should I watch next, comment below or reach me thru twitter. You can also ask questions on my curious cat profile!
