Done Watching, 2018: Paterson (2016), Review

Simple, precious, and somewhat poetic without being too full of itself - Paterson as my first film for the year 2018, and I really enjoyed it.

A look into the simple life of a bus driver who writes poetry named Paterson from Paterson, New Jersey. He adheres to a simple daily routine: waking up next to his whimsical wife, driving the bus, walking his dog, goes to a bar and goes back home to his wife.

Given that my Last Jedi obsession is still fresh, I’m not surprised to have picked up this film. Adam Driver is becoming one of my favorite actors to date. Though I have only seen him in The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and What If (2013). Not to mention some of his cuts from the show Girls (which I refuse to watch as a whole because: Lena Dunham). I used to categorize him as the rage guy since his characters tend to be the rage-y ones, but in Paterson refreshingly, he’s not. And I loved that.

But I'd have to give the best performance to the English Bulldog, Marvin. Everyone did great in this film, but boy... the dog sure is charming. I love him! I also loved Laura, Paterson's wife. She's whimsical and dreamy in contrast to Paterson's character and I really loved that. I love them.

With a simple plot, I liked how Paterson matched it with really visually interesting and intricate details all throughout the film. From the twins to Laura’s whimsical black and white aesthetic to the look of every bus ride. I was floored.

Highs:

  • Soft Adam Driver.
  • Paterson’s mornings with his wife.
  • Marvin the English Bulldog.
  • Paterson’s poems.
  • Real people.
  • Conversations.
  • "If you ever left me I'd tear my heart out and never put it back"
  • “Sometimes, an empty page presents the most possibilities.”

Lows:

  • None.

Paterson shows the beauty in the mundane, mostly composed of dialogue and everyday routine. It may not be for everyone, but it’s a really refreshing one to watch. Would definitely recommend!

I like watching things, and I love talking about them. Not to mention my low-key obsession with taking screen captures. I used to do little thread reviews on my twitter, which I still do to this date. I also have a dedicated Tumblr where I dump most of my screen caps.

In order to bring back life to my slowly dying blog, I have decided to post reviews of the things I have watched here in this place.

Here’s to more life on this blog and interesting things to watch this 2018!
