Done Watching, 2018: Loreak (2014), Review
Sunday, January 21, 2018Attracted by its fascinating poster, I was lured into a story of melancholy brought together by a bouquet of flowers.
*** THIS REVIEW MIGHT CONTAIN SPOILERS ***
I watched this film without prior knowledge of what it was about.
(You should too. It makes the viewing much more leveled and interesting.)
Highs
- Well acted from start to finish.
- Visually exquisite.
- A really fascinating poster that led me to watch the film.
Lows
- Too long ( or it felt too long) for something so simple.
- Slow, definitely not for everyone.
- I felt nothing.
The film opens with a bit of a mystery through Ane (played by Nagore Aranburu) 's life. Bleak and devoid of surprise. Until one night, where she was sent flowers from an anonymous sender. Which then turned into a weekly surprise, always without a sender's note.
From the first frame to its last, Loreak was elegantly lensed. That even in a state where I was about to give up on it, I was able to hold on for I am visually pleased. But as the whole thing moves forward, I felt nothing.
The blame should fall on me, as I pressed play after judging that I could get something out of it from the poster alone. Don't get me wrong, I have bits that loved about it apart from its photography - it is well acted, it also has a story with somewhat of a heart.
But as the perspective comes to an abrupt shift, I felt kind of lost. We are then presented with strands that somehow should be connected (which they ended being so), but it felt unnecessary to a point where the whole story forgets to take its own logic.
An exploration of little-unexpected connections in life and of grief, Loreak sadly tends to linger too long in one place, pulling us away from what it really wants to say. But at least we were given great frames to look at. If you are in on a slow and agonizing melancholic ride, this one is for you (and definitely not for me).
Hello! My name is Caroline and I own this blog!
I like watching things, and I love talking about them. In order to bring back life to my slowly dying blog, I have decided to post reviews of the things I have watched here in this place. Not to mention my low-key obsession with taking screen captures. I used to do little thread reviews on my twitter, which I still do to this date. I also have a dedicated Tumblr where I dump most of my screen caps.
Thank you for taking the time and reading this review. It really means a lot to me.
It would be nice to know what you think of the thing I watched in this post as well. Or if you have any suggestions on what should I watch next, comment below or reach me thru twitter. You can also ask questions on my curious cat profile!
