Done Watching, 2018: The Awful Truth (1937), Review

Clever and surprisingly funny, this golden age Oscar winner gave me a good amount of cozy and an hour of petty.
*** THIS REVIEW MIGHT CONTAIN SPOILERS ***
I watched this film without prior knowledge of what it was about.
(You should too. It makes the viewing much more leveled and interesting.)
Highs
- Delightful and charming.
- Mr. Smith, the dog.
- Irene Dunne's outfits.
Lows
- Leeson.
- A film about nothing, really.
- A clock and two dancing people.
Caught with each other's white lie, a couple from New York decides to file for divorce. Awaiting for their divorce's decree to be final, the two find themselves in a bit of push and pull pinch.
What I like about watching films from the golden age is their forward simplicity - easy to take in, and on point. As for the Awful Truth, you'll go into it, and most likely it won't make sense to you why everything happened in the first place, but then again... it won't matter. And I guess, that is the charm which makes the "screwball comedy" work.
I knew Grant (who played Jerry) after watching his last film Walk Don't Run (1966), and this the first film I have watched of Irene Dunne (who played Lucy). Their characters spent so much time being so stubborn to each other in the film, and that's what makes their whole team up both hilarious and trivial.
But the film's real scene-stealer is a cute pup they named Mr. Smith. He's a great addition to both the roster and narrative. Each scene he's involved in screams ADORABLE! And he could be blamed for most of the times I could say I genuinely enjoyed the movie.
Overall, The Awful Truth is made of utter nonsense with a really petty premise, but it still managed to be a fun film. If you are to think deeply about each characters' motivation, the movie would seem a bit messed up, but if you are to just watch it for what it is, you might enjoy this one (and I did! but not so much).
I like watching things, and I love talking about them. In order to bring back life to my slowly dying blog, I have decided to post reviews of the things I have watched here in this place. Not to mention my low-key obsession with taking screen captures. I used to do little thread reviews on my twitter, which I still do to this date. I also have a dedicated Tumblr where I dump most of my screen caps.
Thank you for taking the time and reading this review. It really means a lot to me.
It would be nice to know what you think of the thing I watched in this post as well. Or if you have any suggestions on what should I watch next, comment below or reach me thru twitter. You can also ask questions on my curious cat profile!
