Done Watching, 2018: Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), Review
Thursday, January 04, 2018Sad, yet sweet and tender. I low-key hate myself for only watching this now. Inside Llewyn Davis unexpectedly touched my heart, in a way I can't put into words.
Highs
- Oscar Isaac.
- Oscar Isaac and a cat.
- Oscar Isaac's singing voice.
- That look of this one scene where he entered a green bathroom.
- Really narrow hallways.
- Strange in a good way.
Lows
- Can seem a bit pretentious at times.
- That one car ride to Chicago.
Following a week in a life of a struggling New York-based folk singer, Llewyn Davis (played by Oscar Isaac). Who somewhat couch surfs his way through the unbearable freezing weather as he tries to relaunch himself as a solo act after his musical partner had passed.
I do in fact have a soft spot for Oscar Isaac since The Force Awakens, but it is only just now that I am watching some of the movies he starred in apart from the Star Wars franchise. To no surprise, I loved him in this. Scruffy with a side of loneliness and dark humor, he gracefully carried the film effortlessly. I enjoyed watching him as Llewyn Davis.
I really loved the use of the cat in this film. As I don't really want to spoil anything, I could give you this: I really liked the moment he called the cat owner's secretary, it was kind of a blatant way of revealing the cat's purpose - but I loved it nonetheless.
The visual palette for this film can be bleak most of the time. Which could seem a bit exhausting for some, but I guess it goes with how the movie is about.
With one problem after the other, Llewyn's journey is not an easy one. Unlike the films we are so used to seeing, there is not one encompassing triumph for Llewyn that could make us feel better at the end for what we only saw is a loop of a week in his long somewhat grim journey.
Amidst the cold, absurd, and gloom, Inside Llewyn Davis gave me something to feel deeply upon and think about. I really enjoyed this film and was really a delight in the second viewing.
Random Sidenote, my sister developed a liking for Oscar Isaac's singing voice that she wants to listen to him sing whilst she's studying.
I like watching things, and I love talking about them. In order to bring back life to my slowly dying blog, I have decided to post reviews of the things I have watched here in this place. Not to mention my low-key obsession with taking screen captures. I used to do little thread reviews on my twitter, which I still do to this date. I also have a dedicated Tumblr where I dump most of my screen caps.
It would be nice to know what you think of the film as well. Or if you have any suggestions on what should I watch next, comment below or reach me thru twitter.
Thank you for taking the time and reading this review. It really means a lot to me.
