I watched this film without prior knowledge of what it was about.
(You should too. It makes the viewing much more leveled and interesting.)
We follow the rise, fall, and the return of a young New York Designer named Zac Posen. From being the fashion world's theatrical darling to his inevitable fall from grace and how he was able to surpass that as he tries to rebuild his reputation in the world of glitz and glamour.
If there is one subject I could go on and on for days (apart from films, of course), or forever even... that would be fashion. It's not like I'm fashionable in a sense, but I love learning about it, especially the people behind it. And House of Z did just that for me.
It carefully chronicled the humble beginnings of how Zac Posen came to be, interwoven into two themes - his family and career. I really loved how that all comes together in the documentary's penultimate where we follow the House of Z preparing for its comeback.
It's filled with interesting stories, genuine stock footage, and behind the scenes look that is so well shot and candid.
And most of all, I loved the appreciation for the atelier bit of it. In every documentary I have seen, most don't really put a spotlight on this theme of people working countless of hours to make a designer's creation alive. The telling that they are essential to a house sure is a great way to simply put it.

Highs
- Candid and fascinating.
- Well deserved Atelier people appreciation! (FINALLY!)
- A very interesting piece from start to finish.
Lows
- None.
I see this piece as if it's a perfect marriage of different stories all put together in one, along with great photography and personalities. It's not just because of fashion that made this documentary great, but the life of Zac itself, and how listening to one's own voice and his genuine passion for his craft was captured so candidly.
I definitely enjoyed my time with this one, would definitely recommend!
Hello! My name is Caroline and I own this blog!
I like watching things, and I love talking about them. In order to bring back life to my slowly dying blog, I have decided to post reviews of the things I have watched here in this place. Not to mention my low-key obsession with taking screen captures. I used to do little thread reviews on my twitter, which I still do to this date. I also have a dedicated Tumblr where I dump most of my screen caps.
It would be nice to know what you think of the thing I watched in this post as well. Or if you have any suggestions on what should I watch next, comment below or reach me thru twitter. You can also ask questions on my curious cat profile!
Thank you for taking the time and reading this review. It really means a lot to me. ( ∩ˇωˇ∩)♡
