Done Watching, 2018: The Vanishing of Sidney Hall (2017), Review

“It dawned on me,
looking out at all those
wonderful city lights,
that I was just one of those
millions of city lights,
a tiny little pixel,
buried within
the white noise of life,
blinking on for just
a brief second in time.
I didn't want to be a martyr.
I wanted to be nobody.”

*** THIS REVIEW MIGHT CONTAIN SPOILERS ***
I watched this film without prior knowledge of what it was about.
(You should too. It makes the viewing much more leveled and interesting.)

What better way to make a movie review comeback than to talk about a movie I liked and cried over (the weeping and hard kind).

We go through the different timelines of the life of Sidney Hall (played by Logan Lerman), an average high school student turned successful writer, who decided to disappear without a trace, or so he thought.

Like most of the films and/or things I’ve watched, I have this vague idea of what they are about. And I guess, after watching one passable movie after another - The Vanishing of Sidney Hall somewhat became that new wave of fresh air I was sort-of looking for.

Timeline after timeline, I was hooked. Not in oh-my-god-it-blew-my-mind sense, but more of like wow-it’s-been-a-while-since-I-felt-something-like-this-for-a-movie sense. Each revelation left me either surprised or somewhat an emotional wreck that left me into tears (and I consider that as a good thing).

It’s not a perfect film, that’s for sure. The way it was laid out in a narrative standpoint may not be for everyone. It’s pretty to look at in a photography standpoint and well acted as well. I don’t see why most reviews seem to flat out hate it.

Highs

  • Heartbreakingly good.
  • Homer.
  • I cried.

Lows
  • Alexandra
  • Sidney's Mom.

A somewhat dim journey of self-discovery and recovery, I find The Vanishing of Sidney Hall as a sincere piece of work, at most. The fact that I cried legit tears was a testament to that.

Hello! My name is Caroline and I own this blog!

I like watching things, and I love talking about them. In order to bring back life to my slowly dying blog, I have decided to post reviews of the things I have watched here in this place. Not to mention my low-key obsession with taking screen captures. I used to do little thread reviews on my twitter, which I still do to this date. I also have a dedicated Tumblr where I dump most of my screen caps.

It would be nice to know what you think of the thing I watched in this post as well. Or if you have any suggestions on what should I watch next, comment below or reach me thru twitter. You can also ask questions on my curious cat profile!

Thank you for taking the time and reading this review. It really means a lot to me. ( ∩ˇωˇ∩)♡
