MONSTA X (몬스타엑스): Official Light Stick Review

Monday, May 14, 2018

I don't want to sound too dramatic but... it was a long ass journey I have been through to obtain this pretty, shiny, precious, looking thing. Even up to this day, I still don't think it's real.

I love going to concerts. I love the whole dynamic of getting to see the ones you admire in person, hearing them live, and just be in present in that kind of high  for 2 or so hours. One of the fascinating factors of an idol concert is, of course, it's official light stick.

If you are to ask the 2013 Laline, I would've probably chuckled at the idea of  getting a $30 thing that lights up, and only to be used on concerts - which let's be real, given that I live miles and miles away from South Korea, I won't be able to use it on a daily basis, aka not a win-win situation.

But then we have the May 2017 me, fresh from letting go of my past as BTS fan and moving on to admiring a new group, which coincidentally decided to release a really neat looking light stick that somehow lured me in to pre-order, then I got scammed by a local store I have trusted, a year later I decided to just buy it from a legit seller, and well... leads to where we are today.

The Box

When the official light stick teaser first came out, one of the of the factors about it that really got me excited was - surprise, surprise - the box.

It's in a very peculiar shape, almost mimics a box meant for drinking alcohol. But my expectation got bruised as it turned out to be made of soft cardboard material, instead of a thick solid one. Not so much of a big deal - but given that it holds a really fragile item like a light stick, and it's price. I was expecting more from the box, nonetheless.

The Strap

Before we move to the main item, let's talk about the strap. It's not that big of a deal. It's like your ordinary strapped, with the name of the group you support. But why do I even want to talk about it? Because I liked it. It's simple, straight to the point, and practical. Most light sticks don't even have straps. Or if there is, most of them are sold separately. So I do feel, in a way... there is some thought put into the whole "package".

The Light Stick

What more can I say? I have waited for about a year for this. To actually be able to have it with me, and hold it while it light's up in the dark was such an exhilarating thing. It would be nice to be able to actually use it in a concert. But I guess, for now, I could settle for keeping it as an emergency light in case there is a power shutdown or something.  Bottomline, I loved it. I just... really do.

I would like to give a shout out to The Seoul Central. I actually pre-ordered my light stick from them a year ago, but to this day I have not received it. I actually gave up on waiting, but I do hope in time, I will either receive it, if not, I hope karma does bite them back real hard.

And lastly, a shout out to my friend Roxanne, who is the reason why I finally have a light stick with me today. You have no idea how happy it made me. Thank you so much!
